The Dancing Pig
Published in School & Library Binding by Gulliver Books (September, 1999)
Authors: Judy Sierra and Jesse Sweetwater
Average review score:

Book review from a regular mom:
The Dancing Pig is one of the best books that I've ever bought for my son. He was captured by the story and didn't take his eyes off the book at any time, and even better, he didn't stop my reading to ask a question. The well written story and the many brilliant full page illustrations definately added to my son's increased interest. The culture oriented story line and illustrations in The Dancing Pig brings a feel of beautiful island of Bali. The author and illustrator must have spent time there in order to produce such a marvelous book. I strongly recommend the book. Your family will treasure this book!

Dark Harbor: Building House and Home on an Enchanted Island
Published in Hardcover by Thunder's Mouth Press (May, 2003)
Author: Ved Mehta
Average review score:

The light in the Dark Harbor
This book - please see Editorial Reviews for some descriptions of it - is worth reading for its author's... well, it's condescending to call it bravery, so let's just call it dogged determination, Or something. Though it is indeed bravery. Also faithfulness. Mehta has been pursuing his reportage of his crosswired life for three decades (and is always an eminently seeable reporter of what he reports), and what he writes here - according to his publisher, "Dark Harbor" is the second to last of his Continents of Exiles series of personal histories - suggests many, many thoughts. And not just about building a house. The back-and-forth between here (New York City, Arkansas, California, this island off the coast of Maine, same difference) and a place like Mehta's original India (he came here when he was only fifteen!) - well, there's much to be seen and newly understood in this book. He tells the story in a supremely intelligent and loving manner and his own supremely crosswired way (also with much humor). There is in fact light in Dark Harbor, and he helps us see it. (Especially in conjunction with the previous "All For Love." Though "Ledge Between Two Streams" too.)

The Dawning of the Day
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1976)
Author: Elisabeth Ogilvie
Average review score:

A lovely Bennett's Island tale.
This is a lovely story of World War II widow Phillipa who travels to Bennett's Island to work as a teacher. Leaving behind her own young son, she focuses on reaching the students living on an isolated island off the coast of Maine. There, Phillipa confronts prejudice against a handicapped child, as well as learning things about herself.

Along with Ogilvie's usual wonderful descriptions of life on an island in the years following the war, the reader also gets a warm and simple love story of two lonely, independent people. As usual with Ogilvie's writings, there is a twist at the end and the seeming tranquility of island living really hides intense passions. A wonderful book I have read several times.

Day by Day to Alaska: Queen Charlotte Islands and Around Vancouver Island
Published in Digital by Trafford Publishing ()
Author: Dale R. Petersen
Average review score:

dream of a lifetime
I found Day By Day to be compelling reading as I share the same love and awe of nature as Mr. Petersen and his family. We enjoyed a cruise from Vancouver to Sitka, Juneau and Glacier Bay some years ago. The observations of these areas in the book were particularly interesting to me. To experience Glacier Bay cruising alone in a small boat was truly an awesome feat. The book describes the wild life viewed in detail indicating how to keep oneself safe while viewing bears, etc.

Tips on fishing these beautiful waters also were of interest. The catching of about every game fish, crabs, and digging clams was included in the book. This book is also a guide to great places to eat along the way, on land sights not to be missed, hot springs for bathing and best places to anchor.

To anyone owning a boat, the mechanical problems described and how they were corrected would be very helpful. Also, a novice would find invaluable the detailed descriptions of tides, times to avoid certain waters and highlights of the many inlets and coves he explored and which are named in the book.

There are numerous instances of protection and guidance as the result of his leaning on the almighty and trusting in God's care.

To read this book is a must for anyone contemplating cruising these waters and it would be a valuable companion on one's trip.

Death in the Off-Season: A Merry Folger Mystery
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (September, 1994)
Author: Francine Mathews
Average review score:

Great Beginning
As a first in the Merry Folger series, this book provided all the great elements of a classic mystery: developed characters, suspense & a puzzle to gnaw your teeth on. The death of Peter Mason's brother draws detective Merry Folger into a relationship with the bog owner, providing a touch of romance woven into the web of mystery. The characters are so well written, without being sentimental, that by the end of the book, you feel they live next door - you want to know what happens next in their lives. The mystery itself rates with the best of them, and the setting of Nantucket is so well written, you'll want to be on the next ferry - but not without someone watching your back!
